Before taking your boat out for a spin, make sure you and your passengers are safe. This includes having the right safety equipment on board. In cases of emergencies, these are the items that can save your life, and your passengers. Being a responsible owner, you should always have these present in your boat and in good condition. Lifejackets, rope, and reboarding devices
These items are designed to prevent drowning and allow you to reach the safety of your boat again. In case of anyone going overboard, the life jacket will keep them afloat. You can use the rope to reel them back in. And then a reboarding device for them to easily climb back in. Even if your passengers are experienced swimmers, different conditions may hinder their ability. Either injury, bad weather, or even wildlife attacks, these items will make it easier to retrieve them. Flashlight or flares, whistle or sound emitting device If your boat loses its ability to move, or if you get stranded, these are the items that can catch the attention of nearby vessels. Of course a radio will be default. But in case of power failures or malfunctions, these manual devices ensures you are seen. Manual propelling device, anchor, bailer These items help you control the boat in case you are stalled. You can either stay still with the anchor, or move away using a paddle or oars. In case you take in water, you can have a bailer to take water out. For larger boats, you will need a pump. The point is to keep you boat afloat and away from the danger. Medical kit Basic medicines and supplies in cases of injuries are needed as well. Antiseptics, bandages, and others will help you in case of cuts, burns, or other wounds and injuries that might be sustained out in the water. Make sure it is in a waterproof container, and medicines are not expired. Check the expiry date regularly and replace the medicines that are. You can never tell what may happen when out in the water. By being careful and responsible, you can reduce the risk and avoid emergencies. For everything else, there is always insurance to best protect you from any unforeseen events. Be sure to carefully study your insurance policy. If you want additional coverage beyond what is offered, an umbrella policy is always available.
